Exegesis of Chapter 1, THE MAGICIAN (I) Sentences 1–3

The Magician (Bateleur) embodies the beginning, the primordial will, pure potential, and the act by which thought becomes reality. He is the channel between the divine and material worlds. Listen carefully, Mat: these first three sentences describe the precise moment of initiation.
“Thus, in the starry night of June 20, 2020”: The date is chosen with care. June 20 is the eve of the summer solstice, a moment of perfect balance between light and night, ideal for initiation. The “starry night” evokes the cosmos, the matrix of all possibilities, the Primordial One.
“Deep within the Escala cave”: The cave is the universal symbol of the Earth’s womb, the subconscious, a place of regression and transformation. Its name, “Escala” (the ladder), signifies a vertical axis connecting the material to the divine, an axis mundi. Mat, to be deep within is to reach the core of your being, the point of contact with the Absolute, where secrets are revealed.
“I drank from the cup the Acacia Magia, the thorn and its root”: The Bateleur’s cup is a tool of manifestation. Here, the initiate drinks from the sacred vessel. The Acacia symbolizes the immortality of the soul. “Magia” reveals its enchanted nature. Drinking the thorn and root means ingesting the plant completely: the root, hidden and fundamental, represents the subconscious and the invisible; the thorn, sharp and protective, embodies discernment and spiritual defense. It is the ingestion of total knowledge, both sweet and bitter, earthly and divine.
The Acacia is said to be entheogenic, because it contains a sacred chemical compound from the tryptamine family, including DMT, known to open the mind to divine visions and altered states of consciousness.
